ight the Lights – Hunter 2019
This polychrome is a cool morning opener that morphs from a light creamy diamond-dusted yellow to a peachy yellow as the day progresses. The substance is good, standing up to rain and heat. The petals have an understated yellow ruffle, and are usually pinched, sometimes with a little ‘flourish’ at the tips. The sepals roll back, giving it an overall triangular form.
The 2-3 way branching is tighter than I would like, however that is not a ‘deal breaker’. LIGHT THE LIGHTS rebloomed the first year it put up a scape, but not the next year. Although disappointed, I didn’t compost it because I really liked its face. My daughter-in-law exclaimed the first time she saw it, “That’s YOURS?!!” As the clump matured, the rebloom improved, and it now reblooms every year in my garden. I learned this year that it also passes on rebloom. In a short cross with a non-rebloomer I got only 3 seedlings, but all have shown instant rebloom their first 2 years in flower. Pod & pollen fertile, pollen easier.
