You’ll Be Swell – Hunter 2020

This brilliant orange and yellow bagel form is a 43″ tall show-off. The green heart expands to a yellow throat and yellow midribs that are slightly raised. Both the petals and sepals have lightly ruffled edges of the same hue. Slight ribbing on all the tepals adds textural interest. The color softens through the day to a lovely pastel blend. (2023 NOTE: I have observed that the quality of the soil affects the color of the bloom. The color is more brilliant in clay soil, and more pastel in good humus soil.)

YOU’LL BE SWELL inherits northern instant rebloom, dormancy, and hardiness from her pod parent, BELLE OF ASHWOOD. Mom also passed on heat and rainproof substance. Fertile both ways. 2023 UPDATE: YBS had instant rebloom on 5 fans of a 7 fan division in spite of our summer of drought and no help from me with watering.

The summer of 2011, my 2 year old granddaughter was in the garden with me while I was hybridizing, and piped up, “Granny, me do it.” I told her to pick a flower she liked, and showed her how to remove a stamen. “Ok, now pick another flower you like.” After she dabbed the pollen on the pistil, we tagged the bloom. That’s when I noticed that Luna had chosen as parent plants, COYOTE MOON and MOONLIT MASQUERADE, both of which rebloom in my garden.

It was a serendipitous choice which yielded several robust rebloomers. Luna is 9 now, and we are introducing our first creations together. Embarrassingly, hers has better branching (4-6 way) than any of mine, instantly reblooms every year and in 2017 bloomed for 3 months. Fertile both ways.

Tiger orange with darker veins, a green/gold throat, and ruffled edges. FCQ has a flat profile, thanks to its pollen parent, SUBSTANTIAL EVIDENCE. Tall, sturdy 3-4 way branching scapes, with no flopping. These flashy blooms can be seen from a distance, one of the underappreciated characteristics of orange daylilies. Substantial substance keeps the color still looking good in the evening. Named in honor of a hybridizing friend who also loves orange. Fertile both ways.

This large, playful maroon bloom boasts a flat, expanded golden throat. The 48” scapes don’t flop, but are flexible enough to move a bit in the breeze, which catches the eye. It is a beacon in the late summer garden, when many daylilies are done for the season.

GOPHER IT has great substance, with the colors still holding at the end of the day. The petals and sepals can twist and pinch, or fan out. The 2-3 way branching falls a little short of my goals, but the form, color, and over-all garden value of the plant convinced me to introduce it. Not to mention that, in the opinion of my neighbor, who used to live in Minnesota, Gopher fans will love it! Fertile both ways, but pod is more difficult because of the long pistil.

This polychrome is a cool morning opener that morphs from a light creamy diamond-dusted yellow to a peachy yellow as the day progresses. The substance is good, standing up to rain and heat. The petals have an understated yellow ruffle, and are usually pinched, sometimes with a little ‘flourish’ at the tips. The sepals roll back, giving it an overall triangular form.

The 2-3 way branching is tighter than I would like, however that is not a ‘deal breaker’. LIGHT THE LIGHTS rebloomed the first year it put up a scape, but not the next year. Although disappointed, I didn’t compost it because I really liked its face. My daughter-in-law exclaimed the first time she saw it, “That’s YOURS?!!” As the clump matured, the rebloom improved, and it now reblooms every year in my garden. I learned this year that it also passes on rebloom. In a short cross with a non-rebloomer I got only 3 seedlings, but all have shown instant rebloom their first 2 years in flower. Pod & pollen fertile, pollen easier. Parent of ‘Take a Bow, Prairie’s Edge’, which inherited its rebloom.

Diamond dusted peachy pink with a strawberry band and edge. The edge is lined with iridescent gold. BLOW A KISS won ‘best seedling’ at one of my daylily club’s annual flower shows. When our president saw her blooming later in my garden, he said, “So, you’re going to register this one, right?” I said I wasn’t because it didn’t rebloom, which is my main hybridizing goal. He rolled his eyes. “They don’t ALL have to rebloom!”

BLOW A KISS does occasionally show instant rebloom, and has given me reblooming seedlings when I have crossed her with another rebloomer. The genetics are in there because of Belle of Ashwood. The shiny gold edge also is often passed to the offspring. BAK has 3-4 way branching, is a cool morning opener, and is pod and pollen fertile and VERY VIGOROUS.

JUST THE BEGINNING is a diamond-dusted polychrome that never has a bad hair day. It is an early morning opener AND a cool morning opener. The heavily ruffled edge does not hang up. Rain doesn’t phase it. It still looks beautiful, although different, after a 100′ day. This is the first of my seedlings that I thought was worthy of introduction.

JUST THE BEGINNING has rebloomed every year for the past 6 years. In addition, I was pleased to see that it can pass on rebloom even when crossed with plants that don’t show that characteristic here in Northern Illinois. I haven’t seen enough seedlings to say how consistently it does this. The offspring pictured below are rebloomers. Just the Beginning is vigorous, sending up rebloom scapes the spring after I lined it out. Branching in 2-4 way and will probably settle into 3-4 way when I stop moving and dividing it. Pod & pollen fertile.
