SHE WORE RED LEATHER
is one of those happy accidents that you encounter when you are working with daylily genetics. I don’t hybridize for doubles, but my first year I got a seedling that had great substance and saturated color, and occasionally some extra petals. Heeding the oft heard advise, “Follow where the plants take you”, I crossed it with one of my favorite doubles. This resulting seedling blooms double 80% of the time, although not always fully double. It also boasts the substance and saturated red of its pollen parent, plus good branching and budcount.

SHE WORE RED is named in honor of my sister-in-law, Lyn Gaetz, who died in September 2021 after a long courageous battle with cancer. Lyn, being blonde, frequently wore red clothes and lipstick, and drove a red Volkswagen standard shift convertible. She gifted herself with the red leather coat on a recent trip with her husband, Greg, to France. I knew long ago that her daylily would need to be red, and she chose this one.
